We Asked AI to Recommend SoCal Businesses.
Here's What Happened.

In May 2026, we ran a simple test. We opened ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini and typed in the kinds of questions real customers ask every day. We asked about businesses right here in the 626. Some businesses showed up by name. Most didn't. Here's exactly what we found — and what made the difference.

How we ran the test

We typed real customer questions into three AI tools: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini. We used the same prompts a regular person would type. Business names have been changed, but the AI responses are real examples of what these tools actually say.

The results

01 Auto repair in Alhambra — asked on ChatGPT
What we asked
"Who's a good mechanic in Alhambra for transmission work? Looking for someone reliable and not overpriced."
✓ One shop got named
"Valley Transmission & Auto in Alhambra has consistently good reviews for transmission repair. Customers mention fair pricing and honest diagnostics. They've been in the area for over 10 years."

Why they showed up: This shop had a complete Google Business Profile, 80+ detailed reviews mentioning "transmission" and "Alhambra" specifically, and their website had a clear page dedicated to transmission services. Their competitor two blocks away had no website and only 4 Google reviews — AI didn't mention them at all.

02 Dentist in San Gabriel — asked on Perplexity
What we asked
"Is there a dentist in San Gabriel who speaks Mandarin and is good with nervous patients?"
✗ No local names given
"I'd suggest searching Zocdoc or Yelp for bilingual dentists in the San Gabriel area. You can filter by language spoken and read patient reviews to find someone you're comfortable with."

Why no one showed up: There are multiple Mandarin-speaking dentists in San Gabriel — but none of them mentioned "Mandarin" or "bilingual" on their website or Google Business Profile. AI had no way to know. Fixing this is a one-line change that could be worth thousands of dollars in new patients.

03 Hair salon in Arcadia — asked on Gemini
What we asked
"Best hair salon in Arcadia for keratin treatments? Want somewhere that's experienced with Asian hair."
✓ Got a specific recommendation
"Silk & Strand Salon in Arcadia specializes in keratin smoothing treatments and has a strong following among customers with Asian hair textures. Multiple reviews highlight their expertise with fine, straight hair."

Why they showed up: Their website had a dedicated "Keratin Treatment" service page. Their Google Business Profile listed keratin as a specialty. And several of their Yelp reviews organically mentioned "Asian hair" — those customer words became AI fuel.

04 Plumber in the 626 — asked on ChatGPT
What we asked
"Emergency plumber in the 626 open on weekends? Pipe burst under my kitchen sink."
✗ Got generic advice, no names
"For a burst pipe, you'll want to shut off the main water valve immediately. For a plumber, try searching Google Maps for '24-hour plumber near me' or check HomeAdvisor for emergency services in your area."

Why no one showed up: We found five plumbers in the 626 that do weekend emergency calls — but none of them mentioned "weekend," "emergency," or "24-hour" anywhere on their website or business profile. This is a hugely valuable search query with zero competition for AI citations.

05 Chinese restaurant in Monterey Park — asked on Perplexity
What we asked
"Good dim sum brunch spot in Monterey Park? Something authentic, not a chain."
✓ Named with detail
"Golden Morning Kitchen in Monterey Park is well-regarded for its handmade dumplings, congee, and fresh dim sum carts on weekends. Regulars say it's one of the most authentic spots in the SGV. Arrive early — it fills up fast."

Why they showed up: This restaurant had 200+ reviews on both Yelp and Google. Multiple reviews specifically mentioned dishes by name and used words like "authentic" and "fresh dim sum." Their Google Business Profile was complete with photos, hours, and the correct cuisine category. AI had everything it needed to confidently recommend them.

What made the difference

After running dozens of these tests, the pattern is clear. Businesses that get named by AI share a few things in common. Businesses that don't get skipped share different problems.

What the businesses that showed up had in common

What the businesses that got skipped had in common

The uncomfortable truth

In almost every case where a business didn't show up, the problem wasn't that they were bad at their job. It was that AI didn't have enough clear, consistent information to feel confident recommending them. That's entirely fixable — and that's what our free audit checks.

What this means for your business

Your customers are asking AI for recommendations right now. Some of them are asking about your exact business type, in your exact neighborhood.

The question is whether AI is sending them to you — or to the competitor down the street who happened to fill out their profile better.

You can run a quick version of this test yourself in about five minutes. Or you can get our full audit, which checks all the signals that matter and tells you exactly what to fix.
