How to Ask for Reviews That
Actually Help Your AI Visibility

You've probably heard that reviews are important. They are — but most business owners are getting the wrong kind. A five-star rating with no text is almost worthless to AI. What AI actually needs is the story inside the review. Here's how to get it.

Star ratings alone don't do much for AI

When a customer asks ChatGPT "Who's a good plumber in Arcadia?" — the AI doesn't just count stars. It reads the actual text of reviews to understand what kind of work you do, where you're located, and what customers experienced.

A review that says "Great service!" tells AI almost nothing. A review that says "Called them on a Saturday morning for an emergency — they fixed a burst pipe under my kitchen sink in Arcadia within two hours. The plumber was professional and the price was fair" tells AI a tremendous amount.

That second review can directly cause AI to say your name when someone asks about emergency plumbers in Arcadia on a weekend.

What makes a review useful to AI

AI is looking for specific information it can extract and use. A review is most valuable when it includes:

Side by side: weak vs. strong reviews

✗ Weak — won't help AI

Great place! Friendly staff and quick service. Will definitely come back. Highly recommend!

AI can't extract any useful information from this. It doesn't know what service was done, where, or what made it good.

✓ Strong — AI can use this

Brought my 2018 Honda in for a transmission flush and brake pad replacement. They finished it in one day and were honest about what actually needed to be done — didn't try to upsell me. I'm in Monterey Park and this is the only shop I trust now.

AI can now recommend this shop for transmission and brake work in Monterey Park specifically.

How to ask for the right kind of review

You can't write the review for your customer. But you can guide them toward writing a useful one. The key is to ask a specific question, not just "please leave us a review."

Instead of: "Would you mind leaving us a Google review?"

Try: "Would you mind leaving us a Google review? It really helps if you mention what we worked on and what you thought — people love hearing the details."

That one sentence doubles the odds of getting a specific, useful review.

Scripts you can use right now

Text message (after the job is done)

Hi [Name], thanks so much for coming in today! If you have a minute, it would mean a lot if you could leave us a quick Google review. Even just mentioning what we did for you and what you thought helps other customers know what to expect. Here's the link: [your Google review link]

In-person ask (at checkout)

"If you're happy with everything today, I'd love if you could share a quick review on Google. Just tell people what we worked on and what you thought — it helps us a lot and really helps other customers find us."

Follow-up email (1–2 days later)

Subject: How did we do? Hi [Name], We hope everything is going well after your visit on [day]! If you have a moment, leaving us a Google review makes a huge difference for a small business like ours. The most helpful reviews mention what we worked on, where we're located, and what stood out to you — but anything you share is appreciated. [Your Google review link] Thanks again, [Your name]

When to ask matters too

The best moment to ask for a review is right when the customer is happiest — usually right as the job is done or right after they've seen the result. Don't wait a week. Don't send a generic blast to your entire contact list. Ask the specific person, at the specific moment when they just had a great experience.

One more trick

If you get a generic review like "Great service! 5 stars!" — respond to it and add the details yourself. Write something like: "Thank you so much! We're glad the brake job and oil change went smoothly for your Camry. Hope to see you next time you're in the Alhambra area." That response is indexed by Google and read by AI — and it fills in the missing context.
